Proposal For Children's "Taking Noh"

(Children's Alfresco Noh Play Illuminated by Bonfire)
Hosted by The Mikage Art and Culture Heritage Association

"A near friend is more intimate then a far-dwelling relative"
(Japanese proverb)

Takigi-Noh (Image)Today people tend to pay less and less attention to their neighbors. The concept of neighborhood community is said to have become obsolete.
Yet we witnessed for ourselves the fact that our local communities here in the Hanshin region revived their community ties to provide a supportive network for residents and victims in the aftermath of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995. We learned the real value of neighborhood communities from our experiences after the tragedy.

The Mikage region boasts a long history as one of Kobe's traditional local neighborhoods and has maintained its strong sense of community identity. Each year, it celebrates its traditional "Danjiri-Holy Float Festival", a festival which is designated as an intangible cultural asset by the City of Kobe and becomes a symbolic focal point to bring the residents together with a strong sense of community pride.
We plan to stage a "Noh" play to enable us to foster a sense of respect for traditional culture amongst young people to strengthen the fabric of community values of old Mikage, and contribute to the continuity of Japanese heritage.

The Mikage Art and Culture Heritage Association will hold summer classes in "Noh" for elementary and junior school students this year. On the final day of the classes, there will be a children's Noh Player, and his demonstration of a play. In addition, children will act alongside professional Noh players on the stage.

Taking into consideration the fact that UNESCO designates "Noh" as World Heritage for the 21st century and that this area provides background inspiration and vital elements for the Noh Plays of "Motome Zuka" and "Funabenkei", both the timing and the location lend themselves perfectly to this project. We would like our children to be able to experience the art of "Noh", with its 600-year tradition, and hope that parents and community members will be able to appreciate and become better acquainted with Noh plays. To coincide with this event, we will hold a flea market to further enhance the project's appeal for the local community.
